A method is described of forming an adherent chromium deposit on a metal substrate comprising the steps of: (a) activating the substrate by electrolytically etching in an activation solution consisting essentially of a substantially neutral solution of an alkali metal sulfate, and (b) electrodepositing chromium on the thus-activated substrate.
