Self-unloaders: cutting edge of the new energy movement technology
Conference

The importance of self-unloaders in reducing port congestion was a major topic at the 15th biennial conference of the International Cargo-Handling Coordination Association. Gravity-type self-unloaders have been used for at least 10 years on the Great Lakes for coal and ore traffic but only recently in Europe. Also discussed were bulk shipping and bulk carrier design with use of more coal-fired ships, even for deep-sea cross-trading services. The impact of increased U.S. coal exports on U.S. harbors and coal-handling facilities were reviewed. (JMT)
