A survey of changes since 1969 in unloading equipment aboard self-unloading bulk vessels covers: tabulation of the Canadian and U.S. Great Lakes vessels commencing operation (1969-1976), salt-water self-unloaders commencing operation (1969-1976), and self-unloading vessels under construction as of 1/1/77; unloading by gravity onto belts in a tunnel below the holds; various systems for elevating the cargo from the hold conveyor to the discharge boom (inclined-belt system, wheel elevators, retainer-belt system, and the Loop-Belt system first used in 1972 and now favored for all vessels under construction); design of conveyor discharge booms; resurgence of coal as a major source of fuel for electric power, with large new terminals at Thunder Bay, Can., and at Superior, Wis., designed to load large volumes of coal for which fleets are as yet nonexistent; and the benefits of self-unloading vessels in reducing the need for expensive shore equipment, in reducing labor requirements and port congestion (short turnaround times), and in dust-free discharge of cargo to shore while cleaning out the cargo hold.
