Synthesis and crystal structure of. cap alpha. -Ca/sub 3/UO/sub 6/
Single crystals of ..cap alpha..-Ca/sub 3/UO/sub 6/ were grown from a uranium oxide-calcium chloride-calcium oxide (UO/sub 3/-CaCl/sub 2/-CaO) melt by the slow cooling method from 950/sup 0/C. The crystal structure was determined by means of x-ray diffraction with R = 0.032 and R/sub w/ = 0.019. The structure of ..cap alpha..-Ca/sub 3/UO/sub 6/ is of Mg/sub 3/TeO/sub 6/ type. ..cap alpha..-Ca/sub 3/UO/sub 6/ is rhombohedral with a - 6.729 (1) A, ..cap alpha.. = 90.30 (1)/sup 0/, Z = 2, D/sub c/ = 4.955 g/cm/sup 3/, D/sub m/ = 4.79 g/cm/sup 3/, space group R anti 3. Uranium and calcium atoms are six-coordinated. At 1200/sup 0/C rhombohedral ..cap alpha..-Ca/sub 3/UO/sub 6/ irreversibly transforms to monoclinic ..beta..-CaUO/sub 6/. 1 figure, 3 tables.
