The thermal stability of calcium uranates in a hydrogen atmosphere

Journal Article · · J. Solid State Chem.; (United States)
The stability and decomposition of CaUO/sub 4/,Ca/sub 2/UO/sub 5/, and Ca/sub 3/,UO/sub 6/ on heating in hydrogen were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction and thermogravimetry. Ca/sub 2/UO/sub 5/ decomposes at 450/sup 0/C into Ca/sub 2/UO/sub 4.5/ with a triclinic unit cell. At 850/sup 0/C, it changes to monoclinic Ca/sub 2/(Ca/sub 0.67/U/sub 0.33/)UO/sub 6/ which loses some oxygen up to the composition Ca/sub 2/(Ca/sub 0.67/U/sub 0.33/)UO/sub 5.83/. At 1100/sup 0/C, it decomposs to UO/sub 2/ solid solution and CaO. CaUO/sub 4/ decomposes at 900/sup 0/C to Ca/sub 2/(Ca/sub 0.67/U/sub 0.33/)UO/sub 5.83/ and CaU/sub 2/O/sub 6/. The decomposition products of Ca/sub 3/UO/sub 6/ at 850/sup 0/C are Ca/sub 2/(Ca/sub 0.67/U/sub 0.33/)UO/sub 5.83/ and CaO.
