Pressure-responsive fuel delivery system

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5742390
This patent describes a fuel delivery system for an internal combustion engine. It comprises a fuel supply with a self-contained electric-power fuel pump responsive to application of electrical power for supplying fuel under pressure, the pump having a pair of coaxially spaced end caps and a case joining the end caps to form a pump housing, fuel inlet means in one of the end caps and fuel outlet means in the other of the end caps, a d.c. motor having an armature journaled for rotation within the housing, and means coupled to the armature for pumping field through the housing from the inlet means to the outlet means, fuel delivery means on the engine coupled to the supply for controlled delivery of fuel from the supply to the engine, and means for applying electrical power to the pump comprising first sensor means mounted on the other end cap so as to be responsive to fuel pressure at the outlet means for supplying a first electrical signal as a function of fuel pressure in the system, second sensor means for supplying a second electrical signal as a function of a second predetermined condition of fuel at the supply, and means for applying electrical power to the pump as a combined function of the first and second signals, the power-applying means comprising an electrical circuit board assembly mounted on the other end cap and including connection means for receiving the first and second sensor signals and for applying electrical power to the motor.
