Third-order secondary echo and nonlinear transmission of electromagnetic waves through a plasma slab

The third-order spatial echo in an unbounded plasma is studied. A detailed analysis is made of the secondary transverse-wave echo when one of the external fields is the primary longitudinal second-order echo field. The secondary-echo fields can be much stronger than the corresponding primary echo fields of the same order. The results are used to analyze the nonlinear transmission of transverse waves through a plasma slab with boundaries at which the reflection is approximately diffuse when there is no linear transmission. Various mechanisms for nonlinear wave transmission through plasma slabs are compared. It is shown that if the frequency of the external field is lower than the frequency of the second-order primary echo field interacting with it the primary mechanism for nonlinear wave transmission through the slab is the secondary echo.
