Fluidized bed technology: progress toward practicality

There is considerable interest in fluidized bed technology. The units are built, for the most part, small and generally exploit only part of the technology with no heat exchanger tubes immersed in the bed or with only boiler tubes in the bed. Combuster designs in which attempts are made to exploit the potential for efficiency and flexibility of operation are remarkably few. In this country, hopes for gaining the type of operating data necessary for implementing fluidized bed combustion appear to live with the TVA AFBC (atmospheric pressure fluidized bed combustors) and the Curtiss-Wright PFBC (pressurized fluidized bed combustors). Laboratory studies and experimental data from short-term runs in small-scale combustors are invaluable in providing an understanding of the possible materials behavior in the fluidized-bed combustion environment, but they must be supplemented by long-term data and by data from operation under realistic power generation cycles.
