Ethane one way to stretch gas supplies

Journal Article · · Butane-Propane News; (United States)
OSTI ID:5716679
Transco Co. Inc., purchases liquid ethane for injection into its gas transmission pipeline at Kaplan, La., to give a steady 8 Btu hike to the heat content of the gas in the line, thereby adding a supplemental energy source without need for any change in operation other than a shift to billing customers on a heat content basis. The ethane is heated as it is injected to promote mixing; otherwise, the cold ethane would tend to layer out in the line. Transco plans to increase its use of liquid ethane from 14,000 bbl/day in the original project to 19,000 bbl/day as soon as a heater for the incremental load can be acquired. The advantage of liquid ethane is being recognized by other gas companies; Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America and Florida Gas Transmission Co. also have begun the use of ethane. Photographs.
