An edited transcript is presented of a public policy forum concerned with energy. The panel of experts discussed questions posed on: methods to reduce dependence on Middle Eastern oil; energy security in the short-term and long-term; the amount of strategic petroleum reserve; the necessary actions to reduce the source of risk (energy supplies or vulnerability) in the short term; the possibility of the Saudis cutting production if the US builds massive stockpiles; and the long-term prospects of energy security. Also discussed were issues on coal production and the amount of coal supplies in the US. The use of nuclear power as a substitute for crude oil and the development of other energy sources were discussed briefly. Action that would be taken should the Strait of Hormuz be closed was also briefly discussed. (MCW)
