Security of Persian Gulf oil

The Omani government, after a 10-year struggle to shift from an undeveloped country to a modern oil-exporting state, now feels threatened by the Soviet presence in Afghanistan, the Soviet pact with South Yemen, and military activities in the Straits of Hormuz. Oman's position at the door to the Persian Gulf gives it added responsibility to defend the area even though Omani oil goes directly to the open sea by pipeline. Omani defense procurements and activities, coupled with economic development programs, are further confused by fluctuations in US-Soviet relations. If the West refuses to help defend the Straits of Hormuz, it risks losing vital oil supplies, 70% of which are non-Communist. (DCK)
