Book ·
OSTI ID:5712055
The purpose of this book is to explore the unresolved debate on the existence of weather cycles. Chapter 1 gives a historical overview of the search for weather cycles. Chapter 2 is a brief course on the statistics essential for proving or disproving the existence of cycles. In chapter 3 the author presents the most direct evidence of climatic change--instrumental records in the form of various temperature and rainfall datasets from around the world. Chapter 5 deals with the causes of climate and climatic change strictly as internal changes in the earth-atmosphere-ocean system. Chapter 6 deals with extraterrestrial influences on the earth's climate such a variations in the earth's orbit around the sun and the possible effects of sunspots and tidal forces. Chapter 7 tries to link any perceived cycles to internal, not external, forces. In the final chapter, the author uses chaos theory to explain most observed climatic variations. The book provides an overview of the analysis of climatic data, the attempted reconstruction of past climates, and some of the theories of climatic change.
