The final part of this series extends the discussion of geotechnical engineering to the stress effects of backfill and soil cover on the pipeline. Some specific points covered include calculation of the pipe-soil interaction force and delineation of the backfill zone. For a given pipe-soil interaction force, an increase in the depth of soil cover is the most practical method of achieving the higher backfill resistance. A compacted sand backfill can be replaced by a pumpable cement-sand slurry behind pipe bends for construction expediency without any loss in the backfill strength. Anchor blocks designed on the basis of the maximum passive pressure determined by conventional theories may experience intolerable movements.
