Using geotechnical engineering in pipeline design, construction. Part 1

Journal Article · · Pipeline Gas J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5943283
Geotechnical engineering plays a crucial role in any pipeline project in the areas of route selection, pipe-stress analysis, crossing design, and backfill selection. Early determination of the character of the rock, soil, swamp, and manmade-fill areas results in a safer, more economical pipeline system. Geologic faults, seismic activity, and groundwater conditions are all important project-planning considerations. Geotechnical exploration also identifies soil settlement and heave problems that could affect the design of facility foundations, pipe joints, flanges, and crossings.
