Using geotechnical engineering in pipeline design, construction. Part 2

To analyze the restraining force of soil at pipe bends and the usage of anchors and thrust blocks to counter this force, researchers used finite-element modeling techniques employing basic stress-strain parameters of the soil backfill, Although the actual radial force varies along the length of the bend in a three-dimensional manner, a two-dimensional analysis on a 1-ft-long section of the bend subjected to maximum radial force per foot proved satisfactory for this study.
