Panelists and witnesses representing local governments, citizen groups, regulators, and the nuclear industry testified on the adequacy of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's procedures in handling the 1979 accident at Three Mile Island (TMI). Responses to criticisms of mismanagement and misrepresentation were made by Anunzio Palladino, Chairman of the NRC. A spokesman for the Union of Concerned Scientists pointed out that not all safety issues were addressed at TMI-1 restart hearings, and suggested that modifications are needed to prevent a repeat of the TMI-2 accident. A panel from GPU Nuclear Corp. and Bechtel Corp. described their efforts to analyze the accident and identify safety needs. Additional material submitted for the record includes prepared statements and responses from the NRC, BPU Nuclear Corp., and other witnesses. (DCK)
