Franklin Coffman of the DOE Office of Advanced Nuclear Systems and Projects, Jacek S. Sivinski of the Sandia National Laboratory's Applied Biology and Isotope Utilization Division, and A.M. Platt of Battelle Northwest Nuclear Technology Programs presented information on the beneficial uses of some byproducts of radioactive materials at a March 5, 1981 hearing. They described programs for irradiating food, disinfecting sewage sludge, palladium recovery from alkaline PUREX wastes, and platinum-rhodium alloys. Commercial applications of radioisotopes have been developed for cesium 137, strontium 90, and krypton 85, all of which can become assets with proper design and containment. The hearing record includes the statements, responses to questions, and exhibits. (DCK)
