Fabrication and properties of high-strength uranium-3/4 weight percent titanium alloy large-diameter straight bar stock

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5684849
High-strength U-3/4 wt % Ti alloy in the form of 3.3-cm-diameter round and straight bar was produced. The starting constituents were derby uranium and titanium sponge. The constituents were vacuum-induction melted at 1350/sup 0/C and gang cast into preheated molds forming hot-topped ingots 13.3 cm in diameter. After homogenization, the ingots were converted to extrusion billets by cropping the hot-top and sawing the remainder in half. The billets were scalped to a diameter of 12.7 cm. They were then heated in a salt bath at 625/sup 0/C and forward extruded to a diameter of 4.1 cm. The reduction ratio was 10, and the extrusion constant averaged 25 tons per square inch. 11 refs., 10 figs., 8 tabs.
