Medical center saving $450K with Powers EMS

The University of Rochester in New York is saving about $450,000 a year with a 2500-point direct digital control (DDC) energy management system (EMS) installed in the school's medical center. The system allows school officials to implement control strategies that were either cost-prohibitive or not possible with pneumatic controls. MCC Powers manufactured both the pneumatic and the DDC systems, making it possible to retain valve and damper actuators. The school anticipates a payback for just over two years for the $1 million DDC system, which can more accurately control equipment due to a Proportional-Integral-Derivative algorithm used in monitoring and control of the building's systems. A directory of major DDC manufacturers accompanies the article.
