Multiple production of particles in collisions of. pi. mesons with xenon nuclei and the question of the time of formation of hadrons

Distributions have been obtained in the number of secondary charged particles emitted in ..pi..-Xe interactions at 2.34, 3.2, 5, and 9 GeV/c. The experimental data have been fitted by a two-component function predicted by the model of quasifree interactions. It is indicated that the time of formation of hadrons plays an appreciable role in the primary ..pi..-meson momentum region > or approx. =3.2 GeV/c. The experiment utilized photographs of the xenon bubble chambers at JINR and ITEP.
