Effect of high pressures on the structure and properties of niobium oxycarbides

The effect of high pressure (4.0-9.0 GPa) and temperature (1200-1800/sup 0/C) was studied on the structure and properties of niobium oxycarbide NbC/sub x/O/sub y/ (x = 0.40-0.65; y = 0.17-0.38). It was confirmed that the increase of unit-cell parameter and density in part of the preparations is associated with a filling of structural vacancies in the NbC/sub x/O/sub y/ lattice. Under the above conditions, an increase was not observed in the homogeneity region of cubic (NaCl-type) niobium oxycarbide.
