Phase composition of products formed during an electrical explosion of a niobium-carbon mixture

Journal Article · · Inorg. Mater. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5186003
The authors have determined that multiphase products, including NbC/sub x/O/sub y/, Nb/sub 2/C/sub x/O/sub y/, NbO, NbO/sub 2/, Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/, Nb, and C, are formed during the electrical explosion (in water) of mixtures of powders of niobium (containing 0.12 mass % H) and graphite. With increasing carbon content in the mixture, the total amount of oxycarbide phases in the product increases while the content of oxide phases decreases. At the same time the lattice constants of the oxycarbides obtained increase, indicating a higher carbon content in the oxycarbides
