Influence of oxidation state on the absorption of plutonium from the gastrointestinal tract. [/sup 238/Pu; /sup 239/Pu; rats; guinea pigs]
A study was made of the effect of oxidation state on gastrointestinal absorption of plutonium using solutions that contained, or did not contain, a strong oxidant and animals that were or were not fasted. There was no appreciable difference in the absorption of intragastrically injected /sup 238/Pu(IV) and /sup 238/Pu(VI) by either rats or guinea pigs allowed food ad libitum and injected. To determine if the conditions used by Weeks et al., (Radiat. Res. 4, 339-347, 1956) were responsible for the increased gut absorption of /sup 239/Pu(VI), relative to Pu(IV), both fasted and unfasted rats were gavaged with acid solutions of /sup 239/Pu(VI) nitrate, in the presence or absence of the holding oxidant (K/sub 2/Cr/sub 2/O/sub 7/). The results indicated that the combination of dichromate and fasting increased absorption about 26-fold.
