Regions of low molecular column density near the galactic plane

Journal Article · · Astrophys. J., Suppl. Ser.; (United States)
DOI:https://doi.org/10.1086/190868· OSTI ID:5668220
A partial survey of the first quadrant of the galactic plane in the /sup 12/CO J = 1-0 transition has been searched for emission-free positions. Over 100 directions at low galactic latitude have been found which have no molecular clouds along the line of sight. The antenna temperature in these directions is <0.5 K for all galactic velocities, implying N(H/sub 2/)<1 x 10/sup 21/ cm/sup -2/ and A/sub v/<1.5 mag. These directions may be used to study distant visual objects or as ''off'' positions for radio and infrared spectroscopy.
