Double electron excitation in heliumlike ions

A Coulomb-Born-Oppenheimer approach to the calculation of cross sections for electron-impact excitation of the doubly excited 2p/sup 2/ /sup 3/P state in heliumlike ions is presented. It is shown that closed-form expressions can be obtained for both differential and total cross sections. The analysis is applied to calculate the total cross section for the process e/sup -/+Li/sup +/(1s/sup 2/ /sup 1/S)..-->..e/sup -/+Li/sup +/(2p/sup 2/ /sup 3/P).
