Government officials and representatives of industry and environmental groups were among those testifying at a hearing on the disposal of municipal wastes through incineration. According to the EPA, municipal waste incinerators are sources of a long list of toxic air pollutants. Steps must be taken to assure that incinerators already in operation as well as any new ones that are built are safe and create no health problems. Attention is focused on H.R. 2787, a bill which provides for the control of air pollution emissions from municipal waste incinerators. This bill would require EPA to set standards for the range of hazardous air pollutants released in municipal waste combustion.
