Technology has been devised for using strong, granulated active carbons made from Kansk-Achinsk brown coal semi-coke and a modified heavy tar fraction. The granules were activated at 900/sup 0/C with a loss of 20-24%. The total volume of micro- and meso-pores amounted to 0.4 m/sup 3/g with a specific surface area of 600 m/sup 2/g, whilst retaining adequate strength. (4 refs.)
