Production of coal-graphite materials on the basis of a modified pitch binder

This paper is concerned with the possibility of obtaining microporous graphite characterized by increased values of density, strength, and thermal conductivity and a diminished open porosity using a pitch binder modified with phenyl-formaldehyde novolak. The replacement of the pitch by the modified binder in the preparation of microporous graphite enables the specific molding pressure of the blanks to be doubled with no increase in rejection for fissures in the calcination process and thereby permits the operation of impregnating the blanks with pitch followed by their calcination to be eliminated. 6 refs.
