Investigation of pyrolysis pitches as binders and impregnating materials for the production of graphitized electrodes

In the reported experiments, the authors have investigated and tested as binders and impregnating materials three types of specially treated liquid products of the pyrolysis of hydrocarbons (pyrolysis pitches) in comparison with the hard-coal pitch which is currently used in the production of electrodes. Extensive experimental data are presented which show that samples of graphitized electrodes impregnated with petroleum pitches were not inferior to samples impregnated with hard-coal pitch with respect to mechanical strength and they possessed lower indices of electrical resistance and of the coefficient of thermal expansion, which is particularly important for increasing the thermal and exploitation stability of graphitized electrodes. 19 refs.
