Production of rho/sup 0/ and f mesons in. pi. /sup -/p interactions at 5 GeV/c

Semi-inclusive and inclusive cross sections for production of rho/sup 0/ and f mesons in ..pi../sup -/p interactions at 5 GeV/c have been obtained from data taken with the one-meter hydrogen bubble chamber at the High Energy Laboratory, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. Cross sections for resonance production which are differential in the c.m.s. rapidity are presented, and cross sections for fragmentation of protons and ..pi../sup -/ mesons into rho/sup 0/ mesons are obtained. The existing data on inclusive production of rho/sup 0/ and f mesons in ..pi../sup + -/p and pp interactions are analyzed, and the contribution of the fragmentation and central mechanisms is discussed.
