Title: Method and apparatus for automated processing and aliquoting of whole blood samples for analysis in a centrifugal fast analyzer

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5635547

This patent describes a system for preparing blood samples for analysis. It comprises: a whole blood sample disc; a serum sample disc; a sample preparation rotor; and means for rotating the sample preparation rotor. This patent also describes a method for preparing blood samples for analysis. It comprises: obtaining whole blood samples in capillary tubes; placing each capillary tube in a separate radial passageway of a whole blood sample disc; placing the whole blood sample disc in a sample preparation rotor; disposing a serum sample disc above the whole blood sample disc; aligning each empty serum capillary tube; aligning each pair of capillary tubes with a separate cavity; rotating the sample preparation rotor; centrifugally separating the whole blood samples; stopping rotation and allowing the serum to migrate; removing the serum sample disc from the sample preparation rotor; rotating the analytical rotor to effect transfer of the serum samples; transferring analytical reagent to each cuvette; and analyzing the serum samples.
