Methods are described for the multichord probing of plasma columns with keV atomic beams and for spatial analysis of the energy characteristics of the flux of charge-exchange atoms from plasmas. These methods have been used in the Tuman-2A tokamak to study the space--time evolution of the density and temperature profiles of the plasma ions during ohmic heating. The experimental data obtained are used to analyze the particle and energy balance for the plasma ions, through numerical solution of the diffusion and heat-conduction equations. The diffusion coefficient is found to be roughly 15 times the value predicted by neoclassical theory and in good agreement with that found from pseudoclassical estimates. As usual in tokamaks, the ion energy balance is governed by ion heating through Coulomb collisions with electrons and cooling, due primarily to the neoclassical ion thermal conductivity.
