Particle diagnostics from ion charge exchange with a target atomic beam in the T-4 tokamak

The energy balance of the plasma ions has been studied in the T-4 tokamak using particle diagnostics. The ion temperature was determined from the energy distribution of the atoms produced through charge exchange of plasma ions with both the atoms naturally present in the plasma and an injected beam of fast atoms (an artificial target). Comparison of the results obtained by the two methods confirms the conventional interpretation of the results of passive particle diagnostics. The active particle diagnostic method reveals that the local ion energy distribution is Maxwellian over essentially the entire plasma cross section. The ion temperature and relative proton desnsity profiles along the minor radius have been found. Numerical calculations have been carried out for the ion energy balance based on neoclassical thermal conductivity; the loss due to charge exchange and diffusion is taken into account. Comparison of the experimental and calculated results indicates that the heat transfer among the ions is classical. The possible use of a similar technique for plasma diagnostics in the T-10 tokamak is analyzed.
