The behavior of the ion temperature and density distributions during plasma compression by the toroidal magnetic field in the Tuman 2A tokamak has been studied by a multichannel particle-beam diagnostic method. Analysis of the density measurements via a numerical solution of the diffusion equation shows that the compression is accompanied by an improvement of the plasma confinement which is better than that predicted theoretically. The study of the ion temperature reveals that the ion temperature reached during the compression is different from that expected on the basis of betatron heating of the particles during the compression. A new explanation is offered for the observed ion heating. This new explanation incorporates the ion cooling during diffusion which occurs when there is a radial electric field in the plasma. It is shown that when there is such a field the ion heating is a function of the change in the plasma density during the compression.
