Plasma compression in the Tuman-2 device

Experiments on ohmic heating and compression in the Tuman-2 toroidal device are reported. A plasma with a density of approx.10$sup 13$ cm$sup -3$ and an electron temperature of 20--30 eV is obtained by ohmic heating in a toroidal field of 3--5 kOe. When this field is raised from 3.2 to 11.5 kOe in 125 $mu$sec effective compression of the plasma is observed: The plasma density increases by a factor of 3 and the electron temperature increases by a factor of 2.5. The heating in compression is shown to be due to improved thermal insulation of the plasma. At the same time, the plasma waves are damped, and the interaction of the plasma with the limiter is weakened. Measurements of the radial density profile show that the transverse diffusion rate decreases in compression. For the compressed plasma the diffusion coefficient is Dapproximately-less- than2x10$sup 3$ cm$sup 2$/sec, which is less than 0.1 of the Bohm diffusion coefficient and in a agreement with the diffusion coefficient predicted by pseudoclassical theory.
