Magnetic compression of toroidal plasma in Tuman-2 device

Book ·
OSTI ID:4430059

From third international symposium on toroidal plasma confinement; Garching, Germany (26 Mar 1973). Experiments on plasma column compression at a magnetic field increasing from 3 to 12 kG for 120 mu s are described. Appreciable decrease in plasma oscillations is observed at the compression. A 3.5-fold increase in plasma concentration and a 2.5-fold increase in electron temperature are obtained. Magnetic probes are used to check the equilibrium. The working gas is hydrogen at a pressure of 2 x 10/sup -4/ torr. Thc measurements are made after intense discharge cleaning. A preliminary plasma heating is carried out by 5 kA, 2.5-ms ohmic current at a ndagnetic field of 3.2 kG. From laser scattering experiment, the electron temperatere in the column center is (20 plus or minus 5) eV. The energy confinement time is equal to 20 to 30 mu sec (from diamagnetic measurements). Electron temperature and concentration near the column axis are measured by ruby laser light scattering. (GE)
