Static quadrupole moment of the first excited state of /sup 30/Si

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
The static quadrupole moment, Q/sub 2/+, and B (E2;0/sup +/ ..-->.. 2/sup +/) of the first excited state of /sup 30/Si have been measured using the reorientation effect in Coulomb excitation, giving Q/sub 2/+=-5 +- 6(+1 +- 6) exfm/sup 2/ and B (E2;0/sup +/ ..-->.. 2/sup +/) =253 +- 30 (261 +- 30) e/sup 2/xfm/sup 4/ if the interference from the second excited state is constructive (destructive). The result for Q/sub 2/+ indicates that Hartree-Fock calculations which ignore solutions other than those with K=0 are inadequate, and supports shell-model calculations and band-mixed Hartree-Fock calculations.
