A preliminary study of fourteen coal tar phenols (phenol, resorinol, pyro-catechol, 5-indonol, p-ethylphenol, 3-ethylphenol, 3,5-dimethylphenol, 3,4-dimethylphenol, 2,3-dimethylphenol, 2,4-dimethylphenol, 4-propylphenol, p-cresol, m-cresol, O-cresol) and a selected and composite model type hydroxyl compound, 2-Hydroxymethyl-6(2'-hydroxymethyl-5'-hydroxy-4'-pyrone-6')pyranyl-(3,2-b)pyran-4, 8-dione were studied. A general procedure was developed for the preparation of solutions for polarographic study of selected metal ions, coal tar phenols, and interaction products resulting from the reaction of certain metal ions with phenols. General extraction studies were carried out on the interaction products resulting from the reaction of selected metal ions with coal tar phenols. Systematic polarographic studies of the metal ion complexes are in progress.
