American coal: the foundation for world energy security. [Pamphlet]

Book ·
OSTI ID:5599581
The coal industry has shown that it can provide a secure fuel supply for economic growth and perform well in the export market. Stable world coal price is the crucial factor, one which the coal-exporting countries can effect. Efforts to increase coal transport and port capabilities to handle the increased coal trade are well underway, with disagreements giving way to mutual economic self-interest in the transport and labor areas. As the leading coal supplier (with 70% of total world reserves), the US is in a position to price coal at a level that will increase world demand. This will require private investment in new mines and in mining and handling technology. A European-American Coal Conference styled after the Annual Japanese-American conference can help to develop coal partnerships. Harbor dredging and slurry pipelines are among the activities necessary to keep coal competitive in world markets. (DCK)
