Coal industry remains uneasy, but an export boom may be on the way

Journal Article · · Natl. J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6815130

The coal industry is uneasy that the promise of a demand boom in the export market will not materialize because of government management, although the industry is interested in the prosperity that expanded exports can bring. Transportation problems will plague any effort to make coal the nation's prime export. The recently-published World Coal Study points out the increasing economic viability of coal trade as high oil prices close the gap caused by environmental controls on coal. There is a growing demand for steam coal in Japan and other world markets if the railroads and ports can be upgraded and slurry pipelines can be built. Coal producers, while wanting the government to take a minimal role, will be cautious in their export contract negotiations until they see a resolution of the transportation problem. (DCK)
