Coal exports and markets. [1960 to 1979; forecasting to 2000; Canada]
Recent studies have suggested that along with the United States, Australia, and South Africa, Canada will be one of the major coal exporting nations in the 1980's and 1990's. The buoyant world thermal coal market, together with increasing coking coal demands, the reemergence of an industrial coal market, and the possible demands for other types of coal-derived energy, suggests that world coal demand may pressure available coal supplies. The growth of exports during the 1960's and the 1970's has provided a strong base upon which future Canadian coal exports can be developed. A large, good quality resource base and an efficient transportation and port system, combined with positive government policies encouraging exports surplus to domestic needs, suggest that the volume of coal exported from Canada will increase. While it is impossible to predict with certainty the size and form of future coal exports, it is likely that future markets will develop from, and build on, the solid base established during the years of growth in the 1960's and 1970's.
