Impact of technology advances on US gas supply

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5597877
Today the Nation's natural gas supply, totaling about 20 trillion cubic feet (CF) annually, is supplied almost exclusively from conventional domestic resources. Best estimates indicate that the ultimate recoverable domestic conventional gas resources are already 45 to 60% exhausted. During the balance of the Twentieth Century, other sources (LNG, unconventional gas, and converted fossil fuel) must begin to make a contribution. Because the economic demand for natural gas at any realistic price considerably exceeds supply, the market can absorb any new technology that can be brought on-stream. By 1990, gas from all unconventional sources - including coal gasification but excluding LNG - could amount to 2.2 to 5.0 trillion CF annually. By the end of the century, such gas could total 6.0 to 16.9 trillion CF annually.
