During the next decade, the only commercially significant sources of alternate gas supply will be SNG from petroleum, imported LNG, and SNG from coal. The major impediments to development of alternate gas supplies are clearly the lack of a firm government commitment to rapid development of these alternate sources and the cumbersome and unpredictable regulatory response to introduction of these supplies. The author projects the availability of these supplies in view of the aforementioned uncertainties, but with the government loan guarantee program being initiated. SNG from petroleum and imported LNG could contribute 0.4 and 2.0 trillion ft/sup 3/, respectively, by 1985. The two commercial coal gasification projects that could be supported would add 0.2 trillion cf in 1985. Assuming an optimistic view with relaxation of feedstock restrictions for SNG-from-petroleum plants, implementation of additional imported LNG projects, and government support of seven commercial coal gasification plants, the 1985 alternate gas supplies could be at least 1.0 trillion cf from petroleum, 3.5 trillion cf of imported LNG, and 0.6 trillion cf from coal, for a total of 5.1 trillion cf. Conventional gas production under a deregulation scenario could be 22 trillion cf, and gas supply would total 27.1 trillion cf. (MCW)
