Some witnesses during the two-day hearing interpreted information on the effect that air pollution and reduced air quality is having on the nation's park areas as suggesting that the damage to date has not been significant, while others urged a coordinated federal, state, and local response to reduce the damage of acid rain. The subcommittee heard testimony from environmental groups, plant and forest pathologists, legislators from a number of states, and park administrators in a series of statements and panel discussions about the nature and effects of air pollution. The witnesses described the results of and the need for both general research and site-specific studies. Some noted the shift in perception from local pollution sources to the effects of widespread transport of pollutants. Two appendices with additional statements and material submitted for the record follow the testimony of the 28 witnesses.
