Effects of nutritional factors on metabolism of dietary cadmium at levels similar to those of man

Research report:To determine the effect of nutritional factors, such as the presence of certain proteins, on the metabolism of dietary cadmium, young Japanese quail were fed either a soy isolate or casein-gelatin diet. The soy isolate diet contained 0.07506 mg cadmium/kg feed. The casein-gelatin diet contained 0.06221 mg cadmium/kg feed. Birds fed the soy diet had higher concentrations of cadmium in duodenum, jejunum-ileum, liver, and kidney tissues than birds fed the casein-gelatin diet had. There were no effects on tissue weight from either diet. The addition of zinc into both diets increased the risk of dietary cadmium exposure. To define cadmium uptake mechanisms that may be similar to those produced by low cadmium intakes by man, the complexity of nutrient interrelationships and their effects on cadmium accumulation require further study.
