Interstate movement of municipal solid waste -- 1992 update

In 1990, the National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) conducted the first known survey of the interstate movement of municipal solid waste (MSW) in the US. As noted in the survey, good, reliable data were hard to gather. Current data are more complete, although gaps still exist. The information presented in this report was gathered by NSWMA from a number of sources, including state government officials, published reports, and the private waste management industry. The 1992 data confirm the existence of an extensive and intricate web of interstate MSW movements in North America. In fact, this web is more extensive than that found in 1990. In 1992, 203 different and regular interactions were counted, an interaction'' representing the movement of MSW between two states/countries as an import or export. This figure represents a 54% increase over the 1990 survey total of 132 interactions. The cause of this substantial difference is not known. The change could represent a real increase in the number of interactions or the effect of improved data gathering, or a combination of the two.
