Landfill tipping fees 1992
In 1992 the National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) surveyed 282 municipal solid waste landfills in the U.S. (up 29% from the 1990 survey) to assess the price charged for refuse disposal (i.e., tip fee). The landfills were predominantly owned and operated by private companies and the tip fee provided was the spot market price for municipal solid waste. Other tip fees exist at most landfills and these fees may be higher or lower than the spot market price (e.g., waste accepted under a long-term contract, special wastes). The national average tip fee in 1992 at the 282 municipal solid waste landfills was $31.20 per ton, up 14% from the 1990 survey. This change is the smallest year-to-year increase--both in dollars and percent--in tip fees since 1985.
