The National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA), a component of the Environmental Industry Associations (EIA, Washington, DC), has historically collected and published data regarding municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal trends in the US. The business of solid waste management has changed a great deal since 1992. A precipitating factor for this change was the promulgation and implementation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) part 258 criteria for MSW landfills, commonly referred to as Subtitle D. This article updates the data contained in the two previous reports and provides insights on future land disposal trends.
