Q-switched lasing as a result of the /sup 4/F/sub 3/2/. -->. /sup 4/I/sub 13/2/ transition in a YAG:Nd/sup 3 +/ crystal and second harmonic generation in LiNbO/sub 3/

Comparative calculations are made on the subject of lasing due to the /sup 4/F/sub 3/2/--/sup 4/I/sub 13/2/ and /sup 4/F/sub 3/2/--/sup 4/I/sub 11/2/ transitions in a YAG:Nd/sup 3 +/ crystal in the Q-switching regime. Characteristics of extracavity and intracavity generation of the second harmonic of the fundamental-frequency radiation of wavelength 1.318 ..mu.. in a lithium niobate crystal are considered. An extracavity conversion frequency of approx.48% is reported. Recommendations are given on the construction of a YAG:Nd/sup 3 +/ laser utilizing the /sup 4/F/sub 3/2/--/sup 4/I/sub 13/2/ transition.
