Comparative resistance of. beta. -Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ solid solutions to molten silicon attack

Journal Article · · Am. Ceram. Soc. Bull.; (United States)

The existence of a wide range of crystalline silicon metal oxynitrides has been well established. Primary interest has been in the ..beta..-Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ solid solutions because of their potential as turbine engine materials. However, these solid solutions are also candidate die and container materials for the manipulation of solar grade silicon into silicon ribbon. The silicon beryllium oxynitride solid solution (sibeon) is more resistant to molten silicon attack than the silicon aluminum oxynitride solid solution (sialon). Chemical resistance is defined herein in terms of dissolution of metal cations only, since the electrical activities of nitrogen and oxygen in silicon are extremely low and, consequently, do not affect solar cell performance.
